The Quest for Greatness One memory of greatness that permeates my mind occurred in 1984 during the Summer Olympics. Living in West Virginia, the entire state and country had tuned in to see a young West Virginia athlete named Mary Lou Retton. She competed in the all around competition that was extremely close. Going into the stretch, she had to perform well in the floor routine and the vault to have a chance to come from behind to win the gold. In front of my television I remember watching as Retton ran on the track in the vault competition where she jumped and landed a perfect 10, becoming the first American to win the Gold in gymnastics.

The definitions of what makes a great church abounds. Looking across the Internet, you will find sermons which state that a great church is one that is dynamic, and where God is free "to move". One website proclaimed that innovation was the key to a great church. Several years ago, a book came out describing what makes a great church by listing four points: Superior Performance Distinct impact on the Community Endurance in impacting the community The Gospel Message Reading across the Internet, I must conclude that a church cannot be great unless it is dynamic, innovative, has a superior performance, and an enduring and distinct impact on the community.
